Haha i think you just said the same thing twice? Either way, its neither.
Your monsters, as of yet, will not doing anything but die peacefully when attacked. Enemy(attacking) monsters simply need to knock down your monster housing to kill the monsters inside.
If I only attacked for looting, I would never attack; loots are just the chocolate at the bottom of the drumstick.
The monsters in your housing do not attack incoming monsters because that would cause an imbalance in the game. If the monsters defended you base also it may get to the point of being next to impossible to break into another person's yard. The game already gives the edge to defending, you'll see this as your level progresses...
